Frequently asked questions
What size awning do I need?
This depends on whether there are restrictions on the building and the application and structure of your building. Ideally awnings need to extend either side of a window by a minimum measurement of 210mm.
How can it fit as my guttering is in the way?
We have an extensive range of specialist heavy-duty brackets to offset our awnings which enable the awning to be fitted exactly where it is required. These are colour matched to the awning and/or surrounding structures.
Does the awning need to be at a particular height?
It is recommended that there is a 10 degree pitch in order for rainwater to drain efficiently, hence the front end is always lower than the wall fixing point.
Is there any special maintenance involved in the winter months?
Niche Awnings are, in the majority of cases, fully cassetted to ensure the fabric is enclosed in an aluminium housing. Therefore, they are protected during the harsh weather and damaging frosts of the winter months. The front valance is easily removed and can be safely stored away.
Should we have the motorised option?
A manual Niche awning, regardless of size, is easy to operate.
An electronic Niche awning has completely concealed motors that only require the push of a button to operate them for ultimate control of light or shade. Both options are available to our customers.
Patiolas and conservatory awnings all have remote control as standard fixtures.
How long is the guarantee?
- 5 years on the fabric of the awnings
- 5 years on the motor supplied
- 5 years on the framework and cassette
Can I leave my awning out in the rain?
Yes, in light rain – unless we have specifically recommended an awning for heavier, wet weather use, since rain can 'pool', putting undue stress on fixings and arms.
What about the wind loading?
Niche Patio domestic awnings are generally recommended for shade and light but are tested for reasonably high wind speeds, in controlled environments. The larger the awning, the greater the potential danger from gusting, unpredictable winds. However, the Dutch canopies and Patiolas are designed to withstand relatively high wind loadings.
Can I fit the awning myself?
Of course, but Niche recommend that at least two people are utilised in this operation to manoeuvre and position the awning to a building. We would, however, recommend that a fully experienced fitter undertake this work, since they have the appropriate tools and access equipment.
